Athletes come together from Alberta and beyond to participate in the annual Turner Valley Triathlon each Canada Day.
Five hundred participants ranging from preschoolers to seniors with a range of athletic skills and abilities participate in this annual event that has competitors swimming in the Dr. Landis Memorial Outdoor Swimming Pool, cycling west of Turner Valley and running along the Friendship Trail that connects Black Diamond and Turner Valley. The distance of swimming, running and cycling depends on the age of the participant in this family-focused event.
Close to 1,000 people watch the event from its start at 8 a.m. until its finish at noon.
After enjoying lunch in one of the area’s restaurants, spectators head over to Black Diamond for its Canada Day festivities featuring music and a children’s carnival in the municipal building parking lot on Centre Ave.
Canada Day Diamond Valley Style takes place form 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and features the Thundering Nations Dancers, local band Puttin’ on the Foil and other entertainers throughout the afternoon. Youngsters can enjoy various games and playing on a bouncy structure.
