Trail races get the heart pumping

Some of Alberta’s best trail runners — along with the recreational types — will be in the Bragg Creek area this summer. The popular Powderface42 – a half marathon and full marathon — will go July 2 in Bragg Creek.

This is an Alberta favourite, a classic, and a ‘must-do’ for any trail runner. The Powderface42 serves up 44.4km (bonus!) and 1671m of elevation gain on some wickedly beautiful Kananaskis Country single-track. The half-marathon starts at 8:30 a.m. while the full gets going at 7:30 a.m. Both races start and finish near the Station Flats parking lot, which is located approximately 11 km west of the turnoff into Bragg Creek from Highway 22. The Banded Peak Challenge is a chance to get some exercise and help send some special needs children go to camp. Proceeds from the bike-hike event, held on July 16, go towards sending children to Easter Seals Camp Horizon, located southwest of Bragg Creek. The event starts at the West Bragg Trailhead in Kananaskis Country, 8km west of Bragg Creek, Alberta.

It starts off with a 5km pedal on Moose Mountain Road to the base of Moose Packers. This is a wide mountain road that is appropriate for intermediate mountain bikers and skilled, fit, youth riders.

Hike to the Summit or keep biking!

Moose Packers has some tricky switch backs that advanced riders will be able to negotiate. We will have volunteers stationed on the trail to assist those who would like to push their bike up. This stretch is 3.8km. The trail levels and widens again above that stretch so you’ll be glad to still have your bike. From there it is another 6.6km to the summit.

Those who don’t want the challenge of hauling their bike up Packers can switch to their hiking boots and proceed for the 9.8kms to the summit. All riders will need to leave their bikes behind at Outpost 5 for the final 2.2km to the summit.

The Banded Peak Challenge has raised enough funds to send more than 900 children to camp in its 15 years of existence. For more information go to and scroll down the events list.

Of, course it’s always great to run the Moose. The 22nd Annual Moose Mountain Trail Race is Aug. 22, offers a trio of challenging but fun runs There are 16km, 29km and a 42km courses. Bragg Creek is located 45 minutes west of Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

All three courses are starting at the West Bragg Creek parking lot. For more information go to

Proceeds from the race will go towards the Greater Bragg Creek Trail Association.
