Rampant Lions show teeth in Foothills

Rugby continues to blossom with the Foothills Lions.

The Foothills Lions Rugby Club is entering its eighth season of play in the Calgary Rugby Union.

After years slugging it out in the second division, Foothills goes into the 2017 campaign with a Division III squad that better reflects the registration numbers and competitiveness of the community club.

The CRU season runs from May to September.

The Lions play their home games at the Kinsmen field, adjacent to the Okotoks Junior High, and take part in the majority of their road tilts just 20 minutes north at the CRU fields in southeast Calgary.

Foothills also boasts an impressive Junior Lions Academy featuring U18, U15, U13 teams as well as those in the Minis division, ranging in age from U4 to U11.

New this season, the Lions are set to launch the club’s first senior women’s team to compete in league play.

It’s a clear reflection of the work the association has done to boost women’s rugby through the ranks.

Also Foothills will be marking its first season with a team at the U21 men’s level for recent high school graduates not quite ready to slug it out in the senior men’s ranks.

The Lions begin their 2016-17 campaign early in May.
