Raiders provide exciting lacrosse

It’s a season of new beginnings for the Okotoks Junior Raiders A Lacrosse team.

The Raiders are keeping a close watch on their throne atop the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League (RMLL), after beating out the Calgary Mountaineers in seven games of epic finals action last season to Calgary.

They will begin their 2014 quest on May 10 when the Mountaineers descend upon Okotoks’ Pason Centennial Arena.

The Raiders, featuring first-year head coach Andrew McBride – the captain of the Calgary Roughnecks , have won three of the past four league championships. The Raiders hosted the Minto Cup, the Junior national championship in 2011 and have qualified for three of the past four Mintos.

The Junior Raiders play in the RMLL with the St. Albert Miners, the Calgary Mountaineers and the Sherwood Park Titans.

The Raiders feature many players who are playing top-level university field lacrosse in the United States.

Some of the returning players this year include fourth-year sniper Holden Cattoni who was second in the league in scoring last year with 97 points (45G, 52A). Cattoni attends Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

New recruits should also bolster Okotoks, including first-round draft pick Brett McIntyre as well as fellow draftees Colton Bymak, Jesse Chong and Jake Foster.

The Okotoks Senior B Raiders also play their home games at the luxurious Centennial Arena. The Senior Raiders have also had a taste of national success.

They qualified for the President’s Cup — the national championship for Senior Men’s B competition in 2009 after capturing the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League championship.

The Senior Raiders will feature first-overall pick Cam Copland, a Junior Raiders graduate, in their bid to qualify for the postseason after missing out last season.
