Okotoks a golfers paradise

The foothills are a golfer’s paradise with five scenic and challenging courses located in and around Okotoks.

Within the area of the town itself golfers have three excellent choices at D’Arcy Ranch, River’s Edge Golf Club and Crystal Ridge Golf Club.

River’s Edge, located on the east side of town near Highway 2, has been operating as a championship 18-hole golf course since 2004.

The relaxed atmosphere appeals to golfers at every level of experience.

The course yardage spans close 7,000 yards from the championship tees all the way down to closer to 5,200 from the front boxes.

Popular holes include the signature island green named Waterworld, a green separated by water at 360 degrees, as well as Death Valley, the affectionate term for holes 13,14,15 adjacent to the banks of the Sheep River.

For more information, contact the River’s Edge pro shop at 403-938-4200.

Crystal Ridge Golf Course rests high above the Sheep River valley on the northeast edge of Okotoks, with panoramic views of the Canadian Rockies in a nine-hole, par 35 course.

Crystal Ridge also offers a state-of-the-art miniature golf course.

D’Arcy Ranch is an 18-hole, par 72 course located on the northwest side of town off Highway 2A and Milligan Drive. It allows you to be a member for a day as it is a 100 per cent public facility.

The course is challenging, but fair. Anyone getting frustrated with their short game can take a deep breath and look around — they will quickly be relaxed and rewarded with some of the most spectacular scenery in southern Alberta.

Just outside of Okotoks’ town limits are arguably two of the best golf courses in Alberta including Heritage Pointe and Sirocco.

Heritage Pointe offers 27 of the most challenging holes you will find in the province. The scenic golf course has been lauded in the top 30 public courses in Canada by the Globe & Mail and listed as among the top five places to play in Alberta by Score Golf magazine.

Sirocco Golf Club, located just south of Spruce Meadows was founded in 2005 making it still a relative newcomer to the area.

The semi-private 18-hole course, located on 940 acres of family owned land offers golfers a wide array of scenery with each hole offering unique challenges. The 7,185 yard course offers a few favourites including the picturesque hole 7 featuring awe-inspiring views of the Rockies and the narrow and steep hole 6. At the end of the back nine, the par 5 hole 17 is a long driver’s dream at a staggering 614 yards.
