If you’ve never been to Stavely, you just don’t know what fun is.
Here you’ll find people always quick to smile and to laugh, with a sense of community that is rarely ever seen in other towns.
Stavely is a unique western community, steeped in agricultural traditions and history, which plays an integral part in the events it holds.
The Willow Creek Gathering, held at the Stavely Arena, July 12-14 features cowboy poetry, oldtime music and some tall tales and an endless string of jokes. Performers come from far and wide for this event.
There are also tables of artwork and crafts available during the trade show throughout the gathering.
Feel like bursting into song, or reciting your favourite poem? Take part in the campfire jam sessions each evening after the shows. For more information on the Willow
The Stavely Annual Horse Show and Amateur Rodeo is set for Aug. 23 with the horse show beginning at 9 a.m.
The amateur rodeo is known for its unusual events and good humour. It starts off with a barbecue at 5 p.m., followed by the amateur rodeo. You’ll be able to see the standard events such as team roping and barrel racing, but Stavely likes to have fun, so they’ve also got wild pig races, sheep dressing and hide races that always delight the audience and participants alike.
The Glen Keeley Memorial Bullriding Competition is Aug. 30. The day kicks off with the Glen Keeley Memorial Golf Tournament at 8 a.m., and it’s never too late to sign up for it.
The bullriding begins with a steak dinner at 6 p.m., followed by a professional bullriding competition at 7:30 p.m. Get your tickets early, because this event is always packed. There’s a dance to follow at the Stavely Community Hall where you can kick up your heels. Visit www.stavely.ca for more information.
Stavely’s 9-hole golf course is a laid-back, man-made green course where you don’t have to book a tee time and it’s only $10 to golf. There are many golf tournaments throughout the year, and visitors are welcome. See www.stavely.ca for more information. Creek Gathering, visit www.wccowboygathering.com.
