The end of summer is synonymous with one of the can’t miss indoor rodeos.
The 26th annual Okotoks Pro Rodeo is moving to the Okotoks Ag Society Grounds, north of Okotoks on Aug. 25-27. It’s the first time the rodeo will be held outside after previously being hosted inside the Murray Arena.
The non-profit event is sponsored by the Okotoks Pro Rodeo Society, local service groups and the Okotoks community. The rodeo comes at the stretch drive of the Canadian Pro Rodeo season so points from the Okotoks Pro Rodeo often go a long way to determining qualification for the Canadian Finals Rodeo.
Spectators will take in a tradition handed down from our forefathers who developed various events and evolved them into competitions against their neighbouring ranches to see whose ‘outfit’ had the most skilled cowhands and the best animals. The Okotoks Pro Rodeo brings the same competition, skill and excitement to its guests for you to see how a part of the west was won.
The rodeo includes all the major events including bull riding, bareback, saddle bronc, calf roping, steer wrestling, ladies’ barrel racing and team roping.
Plus there will be the fan favourite mutton bustin’ during each performance and endless entertainment from a professional rodeo clown.
Past competitors include the likes of reigning Canadian bull riding champion Jordan Hansen.
Friday and Saturday performances start at 7 p.m. with Sunday’s go-round at 1 p.m.
The rodeo often sells out so plan to attend and order tickets early. The Rodeo Hotline is available effective July 1, call 403-938-1518.
