Touted as being the largest one-day car show in Western Canada, the River City Classics Show n’ Shine will draw hundreds of octane fuelled, souped up entries and thousands of spectators to High River’s downtown core.
“In the last couple of years, we were just shy of 1,200 entries, so there is going to be lots to see, anything from rat rods, antiques and customs to pick-up trucks and motorcycles, you name it,” Al Leonhardt, Show n’ Shine chairman, said. “If it has four or two wheels, it’ll be there.”
The car show regular, with his customized Kawasaki Nomad motorcycle, said the show draws in upwards of 5,000 visitors who take in the growing number of vehicles.
“Every year, we see more and more cars coming out,” he added. “The biggest challenge is finding room for all of them. We’ve expanded the show area in the last couple of years just to accommodate all the entries.”
Leonhardt said the show has grown immensely over the years compared to the first that brought in less than 100 cars.
The 15th annual event will take place on Sunday, September 24 and entries will begin lining the streets of downtown High River and George Lane Memorial Park shortly after registration with the show running from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Leonhardt said visitors are invited to check out the upwards of 60 vendors selling everything from tin signs and t-shirts to antiques and scented candles along with the usual festival favourites, such as kettle corn, cotton candy, mini donuts, wood-fired pizza and more.
He said visitors are also encouraged to take in the Burnout Night on Saturday, September 23. Now in its second year, the rubber burning showcase will take place downtown starting at 7 p.m.
“We are looking forward to our 15th year and the 150th birthday of Canada,” he added. “We think it’ll be a bigger and better event than ever before.”
The Show n’ Shine and Burnout Night are free for spectators. Registration for the Show n’ Shine is $15 and starts at 7 a.m. and for the Burnout Night, registration is $20, starting at 6 p.m.
